Window on the Street animation is based on Day of the Dead skeletons (Día de los Muertos calaveras) in my Contemporary Calaveras digital print series.

My Contemporary Calaveras skeletons don't represent the dead as much as the living with some of their bones revealed. They are based on Mexican Day of the Dead (Todos Santos) folk art traditions.

Calavera means skull in Spanish. Prints of skeletons doing everyday activities are called calaveras in Mexico. The famous Mexican calaveras illustrator, José Guadalupe Posada, dressed his skeletons in contemporary clothes and placed them in everyday scenes. Contemporary Calaveras skeletons are inspired by people, places and events from my own life. Carolyn Leigh
